BEHIND THE NAME: A palantír is an indestructible crystal ball from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The palantíri were created by the Elves of Valinor, used for communication and gathering intelligence. Those using the stones must “possess great strength of will and mind” to direct the stone's gaze to its full capability.
At the Lowell Observatory, where the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered in 1930, there lives an astronomical telescope named PALANTIR (Precision Array of Large-Aperture New Telescopes for Image Reconstruction). PLUTO PALANTÍR is a fusion of The Lord of the Rings and the discovery of Pluto.
